Plans for the construction of 316 new homes on the outskirts of Hartlepool have been approved by Hartlepool Borough Council, despite objections from local residents and community leaders.

The development, proposed by Persimmon Homes, involves building on land between the A689 and the Brierton Lane South Extension. Whilst the project claims to bring much-needed housing to the area, the plans have reportedly sparked controversy over its potential impact on the environment and already 'strained' infrastructure.

Local objections were plentiful, with seven formal complaints submitted. Residents were said to have raised concerns about the loss of valuable wildlife habitats, increased risks of flooding, and the strain on existing services and amenities.

Greatham Parish Council also expressed reservations, specifically citing a lack of clear plans for traffic management associated with the development. They argued that without a robust strategy, the influx of new residents could exacerbate congestion and safety issues in the area.

Despite these concerns, Hartlepool Borough Council gave the green light to the project. However, approval was reportedly granted with several conditions aimed at addressing the issues raised during consultations.

If reportedly follows a decision earlier in the year to grant the same housing developer permission to build 1260 homes over five phases on the same stretch of land, with Persimmon Homes said to be contributing over £6 million towards education provision and a further £1.2 million for improvements to Wolviston services and the A689/A1185 junctions.
