The recent election of Jonathan Brash as the MP for Hartlepool has sparked intrigue, particularly due to the surprising public endorsement he received from former Hartlepool Labour MP Peter Mandelson throughout his successful election campiagn.
Brash's election campaign many have saved Labour from electoral oblivion in the once considered safe 'red wall' seat, but as it turns out, this endorsement by Mr Mandelson wasn’t a mere coincidence—it was in fact, the repayment of a favour dating back nearly 15 years.
Amidst controversy already surrounding Hartlepool MP Jonathan Brash's lavish property portfolio, built up on his £640 pounds a month councillors salary from Hartlepool Borough Council and the public's anger with Labour’s proposal to cut Winter Fuel Payments to vulnerable pensioners, questions are now being raised about the unexpected alliance between Peter Mandelson dubbed "the Prince of Darkness", a former Labour MP for Hartlepool, and Jonathan Brash, a figure not without his own controversies.....
To understand this connection, we need to rewind to 2009.....

At the time, Jonathan Brash was making a name for himself as a 'rising star' within Hartlepool’s local political scene.
Despite his youth, Brash was already leveraging his position as a Labour councillor to solidify his influence within Labour’s northern ranks. It was during this period Brash then spearheaded a campaign to grant Peter Mandelson the title of Freedom of the Borough of Hartlepool—an honor that was far from universally popular given Mandelson’s checkered political past....
The move to appoint Mandleson for such a prestigious council role was considered highly controversial, to say the least......
It was considered to be the biggest 'Stitich Up', the Hartlepool Labour Group had pulled
Brash, then the leader of the Labour Group at Hartlepool Borough Council, 'forced' through Mandelson’s nomination in a manner that some described as a “Labour stitch-up of the decade.”
The decision-making process was said to have been 'murky', with accusations of emotional blackmail thrown around, as councillors were reportedly 'strong-armed' into supporting Mandelson’s nomination under the threat that four other deserving candidates, including a much loved sports presenter and local charity leaders, would be denied the honor if they didn’t comply....
One of the more dramatic moments came when the council voting on Mandelson’s title was then deadlocked at 19-19. The tie was broken largely due to the backing of Labour councillors, including Steve Wallace, a close ally of Mandelson who would later be expelled from the party in 2023 amidst serious allegations over conduct in his personal life. .
Meeting was held under the councils 'Pink Papers' Rule,....
or 'Stink Papers' as some like to call it !
The meeting where Mandelson’s title was approved took place under Hartlepool’s so-called “pink paper rules,” typically reserved for discussions on sensitive financial matters. The secrecy surrounding the process has fueled ongoing suspicions of cronyism within the council—a perception that largely persists today.

Fast forward to 2024, and the Hartlepool Mail, a largely Labour-aligned extremist publication then ran a piece highlighting Mandelson’s public support for Brash in the recent election. Mandelson’s endorsement was framed as a necessary move to reclaim the Hartlepool seat from the Conservatives—a seat Labour had shockingly lost in 2021, nearly costing Keir Starmer his leadership of the party.
However, the timing of Mandelson’s support has led to speculation that this was less about strategy but more about repaying a political debt.

Brash’s rise from a young councillor to an MP has not been without its controversy throughout the years, especially over his alleged bid to put his support behind the winding down of services at Hartlepool General Hospital in favour of plans to create a new 'superhospital', plans which were sthen scrapped by the Conservative Government under David Cameron in 2011, with some seeing the most recent developments as a sign that Labour’s old guard is working behind the scenes to regain a firm foothold in Hartlepool.
With Labour back in control of the local council, there are whispers that the same tactics used in 2009 could soon re-emerge, as the party appears poised to bestow more local honors on its loyalists.
As Labour navigates its way through this politically charged landscape, one thing is clear: the connection between Mandelson and Brash is far from coincidental, and the echoes of their past dealings are likely to influence Hartlepool’s future.
Whether that will be 'good' or 'bad' is anyones guess !
