A fresh wave of affordable housing could be coming to Newton Hall as part of plans submitted to Durham County Council by North East housing provider Believe Housing.
The proposal outlines a reported redevelopment of part of Farnham Road, near Framwellgate Moor, where its claimed 22 outdated properties and five garage blocks would be demolished to make way for 18 houses and four bungalows. The new homes are intended for what's claimed to be 'social rent' or 'affordable homeownership', aiming to what Believe Housing claims addresses the growing demand for accessible housing in the area.
The scheme, developed in partnership with Hedley Planning Services, would include dedicated parking spaces and measures to protect existing trees. If approved, it’s estimated the project could create or support up to 75 jobs throughout the build and its wider supply chain.
Alex Franklin, Associate Director at Hedley Planning, said there is ongoing pressure to deliver affordable, high-quality housing across the region. “Should this scheme move forward, it would offer real benefit to the local community, particularly at a time when housing need is so acute,” he said.

Demolition of the existing structures could begin before the end of the month. Subject to securing Government funding and planning consent, with building work potentially set to start by next summer.
Kate Abson, Director of Assets and Development at believe housing, described the location as ideal. “It’s close to the city centre and well-served by local amenities. We’re eager to replace the outdated properties with modern, energy-efficient homes that will meet a real housing need in County Durham.”
