A by-election has been officially called in Stockton-on-Tees following the resignation of Conservative councillor Laura Tunney.

Tunney, who represented the Council’s Eaglescliffe West ward for the Conservatives, was first elected to the council back in 2019 and successfully held the seat again during the 2023 local elections. Her resignation has now triggered a by-election in the council ward, giving residents a chance to head to the polls before the end of the year.
According to a statement from Stockton Borough Council, the by-election will take place on Thursday, December 11, 2025, where a formal Notice of Election was published on the councils website marking the start of the nomination period for prospective candidates.
Those wishing to stand for election only have until 4pm on Friday, November 14 to submit their nomination papers.
According to Stockton Borough Council. Residents living in the Eaglescliffe West ward who are not yet on the electoral register must ensure they're registered to vote by Tuesday, November 25 in order to take part in the upcoming by-election.
Voters and potential candidates can find more information about the by-election, including nomination details and voter registration guidance, via the council’s dedicated elections webpage or by calling the Election Helpline on 01642 526196.
The by-election could prove to be a key test for the Conservative Party in the Stockton area, as they look to defend a seat amid shifting local political dynamics to Reform UK as well as growing competition from independent and smaller party candidates across Teesside.
