From the Beat to the Back Seat? Former Sarge Faces Public Sex Misconduct Hearing....
15th October 2026

A 'randy' former Cleveland Police sergeant is facing allegations of gross misconduct after being accused of exchanging sexually explicit messages while on duty, engaging in sexual activity in public places and disclosing confidential police information to a female colleague.
Former Temporary Police Sergeant Ben Sutcliffe, identified by collar number 2144, is due to appear at an accelerated misconduct hearing on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, at Scotswood House in Thornaby.
According to a public misconduct hearing notice published by Cleveland Police, the former officer faces a series of allegations relating to his conduct during a personal relationship with a female police officer. The allegations include claims that Sutcliffe repeatedly denied being in a relationship with the female officer when challenged about their apparent romantic involvement. He's also accused of sending and receiving a large number of sexually explicit text messages and images while on duty, with the exchanges allegedly becoming so extensive that they interfered with the proper performance of his policing duties.
Its also claimed the former sergeant engaged in sexual activity with the female officer in public places, allegedly knowing and intending that there was a risk of being caught.
Cleveland Police has also confirmed that Sutcliffe faces claims he disclosed restricted operational policing information to the female officer without any lawful operational purpose, despite allegedly knowing that the information was confidential.
The former sergeant is further accused of failing to challenge improper conduct by the female officer, including an alleged statement that she would lie to the force's Professional Standards Department and deny their relationship.
He is also accused of failing to challenge the female officer when she sent him sexually explicit messages and photographs while on duty.
It comes as the number of officers being hauled before Misconduct panels at Cleveleand Police continues to increase, with several other officers currently on suspension awaiting their day before a panel.
The accelerated misconduct hearing will begin at 10am on Wednesday, 21 October, at Scotswood House, Thornaby Place, Stockton-on-Tees where its expected that if the allegations are proven, the former officer who appeared on the Channel 5 show Police Interceptors will be barred from policing.
