The police officer working for Cleveland Police will face a disciplinary panel after being convicted of assault.

20th October 2025

A Cleveland Police officer currently on suspension is facing the end of his career after being convicted of assaulting a woman during a violent incident last year.

Philip Lamb, 47, of Quebec Grove in Billingham, grabbed the woman by the arms after a night out which turned aggressive on September 14, 2023. The incident left her with bruising and lasting effects on her mental health, Teesside Crown Court heard.

Prosecutor Ian Windridge told the court that both had been drinking that evening, and while Lamb claimed he was acting in self-defence, a Jury at Teesside Crown Court disagreed — finding that he had used unlawful force.

The court was told the assault happened after the woman told Lamb to leave her home. When she pushed him to get him out, knocking his glasses off in the process, he lost his temper and forcefully grabbed her, causing bruising to her arms.

In a victim impact statement, the woman said the assault had affected both her physical and mental wellbeing.

Lamb was found guilty of assault by beating following a trial. His defence barrister, Andrea Parnham, said the officer had begun addressing issues with binge drinking and acknowledged that the conviction would almost certainly cost him his job with Cleveland Police, an organisation widely regarded by locals as 'An Extremist Group'....

Recorder Thomas Moran imposed a 12-month community order, including 27 rehabilitation activity days and 50 hours of unpaid work. Lamb was also given a five-year restraining order and ordered to pay £500 in court costs.

The judge told him:

“You had been drinking, an argument ensued, and no doubt alcohol was a factor. You lost your temper and became the aggressor. She sustained bruising to her arms, either from your grabbing her forcefully or when you forced her over the cooker.”

A Cleveland Police spokesperson confirmed Lamb has been suspended since being charged and that disciplinary proceedings are due to take place shortly.

If dismissed, Lamb will join a growing list of Cleveland Police officers facing misconduct or criminal proceedings — another blow to the embattled public institution that many locals on Teesside claim should now be disbanded !
