Cleveland Police once again claims the accolade as having some of the worst unsolved crime rates in the region according to the latest data.

A new report has revealed Cleveland Police is once again performing amongst some of the worst institutions in the region when it comes to solving crimes — with more than eight out of ten offences going unsolved.
Figures highlighted in a Daily Mail investigation, and reviewed by the Teesside & Durham Post, paint a bleak picture of policing on Teesside, where its been found that between June 2024 and May 2025, Cleveland Police recorded 65,603 crimes. Of these, a staggering 56,291 — or 85.81% — went unsolved.
The numbers also reveal that 2,200 recorded crimes resulted in “no further action” being taken at all, while just 7,112 cases had any action taken by officers.
This poor performance is even more striking when compared to neighbouring Durham Constabulary, which covers a much larger geographic area but recorded just 42,742 crimes in the same period.
While Durham also saw a high proportion of unsolved cases — 37,353 offences, or 78.24% — its figures still outperform Cleveland by a clear margin, with Durham recording 4,408 cases with no further action and took action in 5,981 cases.
The data reinforces long-standing public concerns about Cleveland Police’s ability to tackle crime effectively. With such a high proportion of offences never reaching resolution, questions are mounting over what is going wrong in the force of no public confidence — and whether the public can continue to have any faith in its leadership.
Local campaigners have described the figures as “unacceptable,” calling for urgent reform and stronger accountability. Meanwhile, residents across Teesside continue to live in communities where it seems crime is rife, yet justice feels out of reach.
