Purdah Dates Confirmed as Countdown Begins to 2026 Local Elections
20th March 2026
With the local elections fast approaching, councils and candidates across the country are now preparing for the start of whats known as the pre-election period — commonly known as “purdah” — alongside a series of key legal deadlines that will shape the run-up to polling day.
The 2026 local elections are scheduled to take place on Thursday 7th of May, with thousands of council seats set to be contested across England.
When Does Purdah Start?
Official guidance confirms that the pre-election period begins from the publication of the Notice of Election, which is expected to be no later than the end of March 2026.
For this election cycle, it means many local councils are working to a timetable where the Notice of Election will be published on Monday the 30th March 2026, effectively triggering the start of official purdah restrictions.
During this period, councils must adhere to strict rules around publicity. Guidance from the Local Government Association makes clear that while normal council business can continue, local councils must avoid issuing material that could be seen as politically biased or influencing voters & comes as locals living in Hartlepool are repored to have been seeing a considerable increase in social media activity by the current Labour run Hartlepool Borough Council featuring a number of publications with coucillors who are ironically looking to defend their seats in this years local elections.
The beginning of Purdah will mean councils will not be allowed to promote any political parties or candidates using council resources , with local councils having to be careful in thier handling of press releases, campaigns, and social media as well as avoiding major policy announcements that could influence the electorate with the restrictions remaning in place right up until polling day.
Key Election Timetable Deadlines
Alongside the start of purdah, a number of important statutory deadlines have now been confirmed for voters:
Register to vote: Monday 20 April 2026
Apply for a postal vote: 5pm, Tuesday 21 April 2026
Apply for a proxy vote: 5pm, Tuesday 28 April 2026
Apply for free voter ID: 5pm, Tuesday 28 April 2026
Polling Day: Thursday 7 May 2026 (7am–10pm)
For candidates, the timetable is equally tight. According to the Electoral Comissions Website, Nominations must be submitted no later than 4pm on Thursday 9 April 2026, with the same deadline applying for withdrawals.
What It Means Locally
The start of purdah will mark a noticeable shift in how councils communicate with the public, with a reduced flow of politically sensitive announcements and a focus on essential services and factual information. While often misunderstood as a “shutdown,” the rules are instead designed to ensure fairness — preventing publicly funded resources from being used to sway voters during the election period.
A Tight Run-Up to the Polls
The 2026 elections are expected to be one of the largest local ballots in recent years, with over 5,000 seats up for grabs and millions of voters heading to the polls.
As the countdown begins, attention will no doubt turn to candidate selections, campaign activity, and whether councils can navigate the purdah period without controversy as Hartlepool Borough Council previously did some time ago.
