Hartlepool's Middleton Grange Shopping Centre faces an Uncertain Future, as yet another store is set to close its doors...

12th Sep 2025

Hartlepool's being braced for the loss of yet another retailer, after high street health and beauty chain Bodycare was plunged into administration last week. The chain which was largely to see its stores on Teesside possibly saved have now launched a nationwide everything must go sale, as stores are told to clear the shelves and prepare for closure.

Bodycare, which operates around 150 stores across the UK, has been battling spiralling debts, with reports suggesting that almost all of its 150 outlets could be shut down, putting as many as 1,500 jobs at risk nationwide.

Initially, it was believed that stores across Teesside — including Hartlepool — might have been saved under a restructuring plan. But just days after administrators were called in, its claimed staff were told to sell off remaining stock and close their doors as quickly as possible.

For Hartlepool, the news is yet another heavy blow to the towns embattled Middleton Grange Shopping Centre which has already been hollowed out by departing retailers, leaving vast sections of the centre empty & fuelling concern about its future.

High street fashion giant River Island has also confirmed it will be leaving Hartlepool in January, as part of wider cost-cutting and a shift towards online retail & a toy store has also confirmed they will be departing Hartlepool's Middleton Grange after deciding not to renew their lease at the end of September 2025.

With Bodycare now joining the growing list of casualties, fears are mounting that Hartlepool’s town centre could soon be left with little more than boarded-up units and discount stores paving the way for the centre to be demolished & the land earmarked for housing.
