A failed asylum seeker who illegally entered the UK is serving just a 10-month prison sentence after killing a Hartlepool pedestrian—a decision that's sparked outrage in the community.

The case of Gazment Doci, 27, who was behind the wheel of a BMW 330 when it struck and killed Harrison Harvey on the A179 near Hart on Sunday, February 9, is said to be facing mounting pressure to be referred to the Attorney General for review after Cleveland Police confirmed in a statement that they would not be investigating Doci for any further offences related to the tragic death of Mr. Harvey—a move which has fuelled considerable public anger.
Doci, originally from Albania, had been in the UK illegally after his asylum application was rejected in June 2023. At the time of the collision, it was discovered that he had no valid driver’s licence and was driving without insurance.

Despite reports that he will be deported after serving his sentence, many locals are furious at what they see as a 'soft touch' approach by the courts towards an illegal immigrant whose reckless actions cost an innocent man his life.
Mr. Harvey’s family have described him as a loving son, brother, and a friend to many, and now, pressure is mounting on Hartlepool’s Labour MP, Jonathan Brash, to demand that the Attorney General reviews Doci’s sentence.
The case comes just 15 months after another high-profile tragedy in the town, where a multiple failed asylum seeker stabbed a Hartlepool man to death—a crime for which he is now serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 40 years. With tensions in the community reaching boiling point, many are questioning how many more lives must be lost before tougher action is taken against those who enter the UK illegally and break the law.
