Labour Faces Hartlepool Backlash as Brash Warns Starmer His Time Is Up...

22nd April 2026

Hartlepool Labour MP Jonathan Brash has become the latest backbencher to publicly pile the pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer, warning that it is now a question of “when, not if” the Labour leader is forced to step down.

Speaking to national media, Mr Brash said that he's “completely fed up” with what he described as the ongoing “psychodrama” and a series of political “own goals” coming from within his own Government.

His intervention comes just days after claims emerged that Sir Keir Starmer may have misled Parliament in a vetting scandal linked to senior New Labour figure Peter Mandelson — a row that's sparked growing unrest among backbench MPs.

With local elections looming in just a fortnight, fears are said to be mounting within Labour's ranks that the party's on course to suffer heavy losses in Hartlepool, with councils across the country — including Hartlepool — at risk of falling out of Labour control, potentially to Reform UK.

Mr Brash, who was elected as Hartlepool’s MP in 2024, has also faced increasing scrutiny from his own constituents amid the Mandelson controversy.

The Teesside & Durham Post previously revealed images showing Mr Mandelson campaigning alongside Mr Brash during his election bid, months before he secured the seat.

Further questions have been raised over claims that companies linked to Mr Mandelson made so-called “small token donations” to Mr Brash’s campaign in its early stages.

While such contributions all fall within the electoral rules and do not require declaration due to their low value, their connection to the wider scandal has intensified local criticism & hurt Brash's election poll ratings putting him now well within the realms to lose his constituency seat for Hartlepool if a general election was to be held tomorrow.

The timing of Mr Brash’s comments is particularly significant, with Local Council elections just weeks away. Political insiders increasingly suggest Labour are on track to lose control of the troubled teesside authority — a result that, if mirrored nationally, could trigger a full-scale backbench rebellion against Sir Keir, with speculation growing that such a rebellion could culminate in a formal vote of no confidence, potentially forcing the Prime Minister from office.

However, after that, soures within the Labour party claim the damage will have been done & Labour almost certain to see a turbulent end to its government, even if its able to manage to survive the next three years before an official general election would be called.
