Calls for better night time security after a gang of youths attack a Man in Hartlepool.
2nd July 2025
Concerns are growing over public safety at Hartlepool’s main transport hub after a man was reportedly assaulted outside the train station late on the evening of 24 June.
The area surrounding the station, particularly the nearby bus stops, is said to have become a well-known gathering point for local youths, with local residents claiming the spot has turned into a magnet for anti-social behaviour once darkness falls—highlighting poor lighting and a noticeable absence of police patrols.
Emergency services had to be called after reports surfaced a group of teenagers had been throwing glass bottles at a passing taxi before turning on a 54-year-old man. The victim, who suffered minor injuries, was allegedly attacked while taking shelter at one of the station bus stops just a short distance away from Hartlepool's Train Station.
Footage captured by a bystander appears to show a group of youths surrounding and assaulting a man believed to be homeless. Witnesses say the attackers then fled the scene upon hearing police sirens.
Cleveland Police have since launched an investigation, reviewing CCTV and any available mobile phone footage, but its claimed no arrests have been made. Officers are said to be appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information.
A local resident who filmed the incident but asked not to be named told us:
“This street is pitch black at night and totally deserted. These kinds of attacks are becoming normal around here. It’s not right—there needs to be better lighting and more police out and about.”
In response, Chief Inspector Andy Liddell acknowledged ongoing community concerns:
“Our Neighbourhood Policing Team continues to focus on the issues most affecting local people. Regular patrols are being carried out, and our officers work closely with other agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour. We encourage the public to keep reporting incidents—it helps us take the right action.”
Hartlepool Borough Council has declined to comment whilst the police investigation is ongoing, with the incident adding to the already growing pressure on Cleveland Police to improve safety measures around key public spaces in Hartlepool, with many residents feeling they're being left to deal with escalating disorder without adequate support.
