Labour MP’s Wife Takes Over as Hartlepool Council Leader After Shock Resignation
3rd October 2025
Hartlepool politics was thrown into turmoil last night after Labour council leader Brenda Harrison dramatically resigned during a full council meeting.

In a move that has raised eyebrows across the town, Labour wasted no time in announcing her replacement — Cllr Pamela Hargreaves, the wife of serving Labour MP Jonathan Brash. The appointment's already sparked debate, coming just months before an election that many believe will see Labour lose control of Hartlepool Borough Council once again.
With Reform UK gaining momentum through a string of by-election victories in the town, confidence in Labour’s ability to hold a majority at Hartlepool Borough Council in 2026 is slipping. Harrison’s sudden departure, and the decision to install Brash’s wife as leader, will only fuel speculation about Labour’s grip on power.
The announcement of the leadership change was kept tightly under wraps until yesterday’s council meeting, when Hargreaves was formally unveiled as the new leader.
She will now face the challenge of leading both the council and managing her own re-election campaign when she attempts to defend her council seat in May 2026.
In a statement, Hartlepool Labour paid tribute to Harrison’s tenure:
“After 18 months of outstanding service, Councillor Brenda Harrison has stepped back as Leader of Hartlepool Borough Council… Brenda has been an inspirational leader since 2020 – guiding Labour from its lowest point in years to a landslide victory in 2024.”
Harrison, the first woman to lead the council, said it had been “an honour” to serve and pledged her full support to Hargreaves.
For her part, Hargreaves highlighted her track record in securing funding and her role in local business, pledging to “work every day to make sure our Council is focused on supporting local people, growing our economy, and delivering the services our communities deserve.”

But for many in Hartlepool, the real story now is what happens next. With local elections looming in May 2026 — and national polls predicting major gains for Reform UK across swathes of local councils — Labour’s choice to hand the leadership to the town MP’s wife will no doubt become a lightning rod for criticism.
If the predictions prove correct, Hartlepool could once again flip away from Labour control in juts months, adding to the mounting pressure on Keir Starmer’s leadership nationally, with some suggesting the Labour Prime Minister could stand down in the aftermath of a Reform UK election 'bloodbath'...
