While You Sleep: Early-Morning Car Prowlers Move Through Hartlepool Street

9th April 2026

Residents in parts of Hartlepool are being told to ensure their vehicles are secure after a series of suspicious incidents involving individuals reportedly attempting car door handles in the early hours of the yesterday morning.

Police have confirmed that incidents have been reported in the towns Burn Valley area, specifically around Whitby Walk and Spurn Walk, during late March. While no thefts have been reported at this stage, the behaviour is widely recognised as a tactic used by opportunistic offenders targeting vehicles left unlocked, with the Teesside & Durham Post understanding that similar incidents have reportedly taken place between 03:00 and 05:30 on several streets closer to the town centre yesterday morning (8th April 2026), in areas including Duke Street, Topcliffe Street, and Sandringham Road, raising concerns that the activity could be more widespread than initially believed.

Residents in these areas have described individuals moving from vehicle to vehicle under the cover of darkness, attempting door handles in search of easy access.

Police Response and Ongoing Enquiries

Neighbourhood Policing teams are said to have been carrying out 'reassurance patrols' in affected areas and are currently reviewing any available CCTV footage in an effort to identify those responsible.

Officers are now urging residents to take preventative measures and remain vigilant.

Anyone with CCTV, Ring doorbell footage, or information relating to the incidents is urged to contact Cleveland Police on 101, quoting reference SE26051496.

Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously via Crimestoppers online or by calling 0800 555 111.
