The decision by Hartlepool Borough Council to fly the Ukrainian national flag outside its premises this weekend is more than just a symbolic gesture—it's once again a troubling example of political posturing by a local council already plagued by a serious crisis of public confidence.

In 2023, Hartlepool Borough Council was declared an authority of no public confidence, a petition that was swiftly ignored by the local council. The town's residents have long expressed deep frustration with the council’s performance, citing a lack of transparency, deteriorating public services, and chronic financial mismanagement. Yet rather than address these local concerns, the council appears intent on engaging in 'wokeist' global virtue-signalling that raises both ethical and democratic questions about Hartlepool Borough Council itself.

Ukraine, under its Dictator Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has not held a presidential election since the outbreak of its war with Russia back in 2022. Whilst martial law may explain the delay, it does not justify the imprisonment of political opponents, the banning of opposition parties, or the suppression of media outlets critical of its regime—all the hallmarks of authoritarianism, not democracy. For Hartlepool Borough Council to publicly display allegiance to such a government sends a deeply controversial message about its own stance on democratic values, democratic values it chooses to obey where & whenever it wishes to do so.

While theres a case to be made for humanitarian support in times of conflict, it is entirely another matter for a local British council—accountable to UK taxpayers—to be appearing to endorse a foreign regime accused of locking up dissidents, conscripting thousands of young men into its army and mismanaging billions of pounds in international aid.

It raises a very important question:

Just who gave Hartlepool Borough Council the mandate to take a position on an international war, let alone to visibly support a government with an increasingly authoritarian record?

Flying the Ukraine flag may be viewed by some as a sign of solidarity—but in the context of Hartlepool’s own visible democratic failures, it's seen by many residents as an insult. It is a stark reminder of just how detached Hartlepool Borough Council has become from its own electorate. When local people are facing rising council tax bills, crumbling services, and a housing crisis, political displays of this nature feel not only irrelevant, but actually offensive.

This act does not reflect the will of the people—it reflects the will of a discredited political body desperate to mask its failures at home by posturing abroad. If Hartlepool Borough Council truly believes in democratic principles, it should start by restoring them here in Hartlepool.

Until then, the flying of the Ukraine flag stands as a symbol—not of solidarity, but one of contempt.
