Safety Notice Extended at Hartlepool Nuclear Plant After Worker Incident
14th April 2026
Safety improvements at a Hartlepool nuclear power station are said to be 'still ongoing', after regulators granted more time for work to be completed following a workplace incident late last year.
The UK’s nuclear watchdog, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), confirmed it's issued a short extension to an improvement notice served at Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station. The notice was originally put in place after an incident on 9 November 2025 involving two technicians working for EDF Energy.
Its claimed during routine maintenance work, a joint connected to a system containing pressurised hydraulic oil was disconnected. The oil was unexpectedly released and came into contact with both workers.
The employees were taken to hospital as a precaution.
The ONR has stressed there was no risk to nuclear safety, the public, or the environment.
The improvement notice required EDF to strengthen safety procedures—particularly around how maintenance work is planned and carried out. While the ONR says progress has been made, it's agreed to extend the deadline beyond the original 17 April 2026 completion date.
The new deadline for full compliance is now 29 May 2026.
The ONR has made clear it will continue to closely monitor the situation until all requirements are fully met.
