A well-known local waste business has announced its closure following a devastating arson attack that left its owners facing an impossible decision.
Craig & Beth, of TRC Skip Hire – known locally as 'The Rubbish Couple', became affectionately known across Teesside for their down-to-earth approach and commitment to customers, however a suspected arson attack on their only vehicle last week revealed that the emotional and financial strain the attack had caused leaving the couple forced to step back from the business permanently.
In a heartfelt post shared on social media, they said:
“After an arson attack we’ve made a lot of decisions — to keep going or to close the business. We’ve gone back and forth, but it’s way too expensive to set back up again. We were going to go for it — rise from the ashes as they say. But we had a foster baby in our care that has now had to be moved on due to the threat. This absolutely broke Beth. So we’ve made the decision to be there full time for James and concentrate on our family now.”
The couple thanked their loyal customers for the overwhelming support they received following the incident — including offers to start fundraising campaigns — but said they couldn’t in good conscience accept donations knowing there was a chance something similar could happen again.
Despite the closure, there’s positive news for customers. With it being announced that Teesside Skip Hire & Waste Management Ltd will take over operations, ensuring that services continue seamlessly — with the same contact details, prices, and high standards.
“Teesside Skip Hire & Waste Management Ltd are taking over TRC Skip Hire (The Rubbish Couple). All prices are staying the same — same number, same service, same page — just a different owner,” they explained.
The couple described the new operators as “amazing” and “just like us — a small unit with a fantastic workforce.”
For many local residents and businesses, TRC Skip Hire has been more than just a skip service — it was a family-run operation built on honesty, reliability, and community spirit. The news of the closure will come as a blow to many across Teesside who supported the pair through thick and thin.
Its understood Cleveland Police are still investigating the incident in relation to the arson attack on the vehicle
Customers can continue to book skips and waste services using the same phone number and Facebook page, now operated by Teesside Skip Hire & Waste Management Ltd.
