Shoppers in Hartlepool have been dealt another blow, as national charity chain The British Heart Foundation this week confirmed the official closure date of its Hartlepool Store is just days away.
A closure notice seen by one of The Teesside & Durham Post’s reporters today confirms that the furniture and electrical store at Middleton Grange Shopping Centre in Hartlepool will shut its doors on the 14th November 2026, with the announcement following on from our earlier report that Hartlepool was set to be among several North East locations affected by a major reduction in the charity’s shops retail network, with Middleton Grange Hartlepool named alongside stores in Stockton, Durham City, Newton Aycliffe and Consett which were all set for the axe.
The Departure of the British Heart Foundation will also remove a local donation point supporting the charity’s research, with the closure said to be part of a national programme of restructuring affecting around 150 British Heart Foundation shops and stores.
The charity announced back in June 2026 that it was proposing the closure of approximately 90 branches by March 2027, followed by the remainder by March 2028.
BHF says the decision follows a review of its retail operations, which found that rising operating costs and changing customer habits had made some of its shops financially unsustainable.
Although the stores sell donated goods and benefit from volunteers’ time, its claimed they still incur substantial costs to operate. The charity says reducing its network will now help protect the money its retail business contributes towards research into heart and circulatory diseases.

Chief executive Dr Charmaine Griffiths described the trading environment as “exceptionally challenging” and acknowledged the importance of the shops to employees, volunteers and their communities. BHF said it would support those affected by the changes.
In Hartlepool, the closure adds to the loss of retailers from Middleton Grange, with the store’s windows now carrying confirmation of its approaching departure in just days.
BHF Hartlepool says that its nearest store for customers will now be in Middlesbrough.
The news comes just days after Poundland filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators, leaving around 12,000 employees facing uncertainty ahead of Christmas, with the chain’s founder warning that the wider impact could affect as many as 30,000 jobs across the business, its suppliers and neighbouring retailers if it collapses, where for towns such as Hartlepool, Stockton and Middlesbrough, the developments raise fears of further empty shops and job losses during the crucial festive trading period, as retailers struggle with rising costs and fierce competition.
