Drivers Warned of Overnight Closures as Hartlepool Roundabout Gets Resurfaced

7th March 2026

Motorists travelling through Hartlepool are being warned of temporary night-time road closures as work begins to repair a worn-out road surface at one of the town’s busiest roundabouts.

Hartlepool Borough Council's confirmed that resurfacing work will take place at the A179 Marina Way/Powlett Road/Cleveland Road roundabout, a key junction used by drivers heading between the town centre, the Headland and surrounding residential areas.

The improvement scheme is scheduled to start on Sunday, 8th March, with the roundabout closed overnight for three consecutive nights between 7pm and 5am. The junction will remain open during the day to minimise disruption for commuters and businesses.

Council officials say the work has been brought forward after increasing concerns were raised about deteriorating condition of the road surface.

Councillor Owen Riddle, Chair of Hartlepool Borough Council’s Neighbourhoods and Regulatory Services Committee, said the council had been monitoring the area closely.

“We have been monitoring the condition of the carriageway and listened to the concerns from residents about the deteriorating state of the road surface at this busy location,” he said.

“We have taken a decision to bring this scheme forward in our five-year highway maintenance programme in order to resolve the issue before it gets any worse.”

During the overnight closures, signed diversion routes will be in place to guide drivers around the works.

Traffic travelling northbound will be diverted via Clarence Road and Lancaster Road, while southbound vehicles will be routed along Raby Road. Drivers heading to and from the Headland will be directed along West View Road.

Motorists are being advised to allow extra time for journeys during the overnight works and to follow diversion signs in place.
