Hartlepool Borough Council has reportedly secured a £631,440 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to push forward its "Tides of Change" project, which aims to revamp the Museum of Hartlepool and the historic paddle steamer, Wingfield Castle.

The funding will reportedly allow the local council, which in 2023 was declared an authority of no public confidence to move into the development phase, with plans to enhance the visitor experience and breathe new life into the local landmarks, with an artist’s impression released, showcasing a redesigned museum entrance that opens onto the Wingfield Castle, along with a scenic outdoor area intended to make the space more inviting.

However, some local residents are said to be 'sceptical' over whether the project will materialise as promised, given numerous failed artist impressions of other projects in the town over the last decade which have failed to materialise, with Hartlepool seeing its fair share of ambitious proposals that never came to fruition—such as the much-hyped regeneration of Church Street, the Shades Fiasco, & even the failed Jackson's Landing redevelopment that led to plans eventually being scrapped & the site now becoming the home of an upcoming leisure centre.

These past disappointments have left the public understandingly wary of grand visions that often amount to little more than artist impressions and very expensive empty promises.

With the National Lottery Heritage Fund said to be backing the scheme, the council insists that this time, things will be different. But until real progress is seen on the ground rather than on an artists sketchbook many in Hartlepool will be watching with cautious optimism to see whether these plans actually make it off the ground, or whether this is yet another expensive pipe dream.
