Proposals have been submitted to Hartlepool Borough Council that could breathe new life into a former church, community centre, and vicar’s house by transforming them into nine modern residential homes.

The application, put forward by ASP Services Ltd on behalf of Mr. Michael Ford, aims to convert the St Thomas More former Roman Catholic Church in Hartlepool's Easington Road into high-quality, self-contained dwellings while preserving its unique architectural character. The development promises to be a sympathetic and sustainable adaptation, ensuring the long-term use of these underutilized buildings.

If approved, its claimed the transformation will involve the Creation of 20 off-street parking spaces to accommodate both residents and visitors which the applicants claim will ease congestion in the area, Landscaping enhancements, including private gardens for each home, to provide outdoor living spaces and improve the overall aesthetic of the site will be included, as well as the Preservation of key architectural features, such as stained glass windows and vaulted ceilings, to maintain the site's historical charm.

Whilst its claimed the internal layout will be updated to meet modern living standards, the exterior of the buildings will see minimal changes, ensuring the character of the site remains intact. The applicant's also state that where necessary, existing openings will be adapted to suit residential use while maintaining the integrity of the original design.

A Positive Step for Local Housing

Located within an already established residential area of Hartlepool, St Thomas More Church and its associated buildings are said to be 'ideally positioned' with access to schools, local amenities, and public transport links. The surrounding land, which the applicants claim is currently underutilized, provides an excellent opportunity for this redevelopment to contribute to the town’s housing supply.

By re-purposing the buildings, the applicants claim the proposal ensures the site remains viable for years to come, whilst respecting its heritage. The inclusion of private gardens and parking spaces makes it even more appealing for potential homeowners.

HBC Exposed understands the church effectively become redundant several years ago, and the site marketed for sale recently, however as its claimed the declining numbers of churchgoers has led to a number of similar sites across the country being placed up for sale, many of which falling into the hands of developers seeking to either convert the sites into housing, or for other religious uses.

When Will a Decision Be Made?

Hartlepool Borough Council is expected to make a decision on the application within the next four weeks, where if approved, the project could set a significant precedent for re-purposing former religious & historical buildings into valuable housing solutions.
