23rd November 2025

A former Hartlepool town councillor who played a key role in protecting and promoting the town’s heritage has passed away at the age of 78.

The death of Jim Ainslie was announced this week by Victoria House Funeral Service, prompting tributes from those who remember his long-standing commitment to the community and to Hartlepool’s historic identity.

Mr Ainslie, who previously served as a Labour councillor for the towns Headland ward, was known for his deep passion for local heritage, conservation, and the arts.

During his time at Hartlepool Borough Council, he became one of the most influential voices in driving forward regeneration efforts within the town centre. One of his most significant achievements reportedly came in 2016, when he was instrumental in securing £1.2 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the regeneration of the Church Street area.

This major investment helped support the conservation and restoration of historic buildings, as well as funding for community-led heritage projects & the development of the emerging Innovation and Skills Quarter, including the creation of the new £11 million Cleveland College of Art and Design

Ainslie frequently highlighted how the area was “steeped in history” and emphasised the importance of preserving Hartlepool’s unique character for future generations. His work aligned closely with Hartlepool Borough Council’s broader Vision plan, aimed at boosting prosperity, supporting local jobs, and revitalising neglected areas of the town.

Beyond his council duties, Jim Ainslie held several influential positions, including, Heritage Champion for Hartlepool Borough Council as well as Trustee of Tees Valley Arts, supporting cultural and artistic initiatives across the region...

Through these roles, he continued to advocate for the protection of local heritage, while promoting opportunities for young people and community groups to engage with the arts.

Stepping back from public life in later years, Mr Ainslie remained widely respected for his dedication to Hartlepool’s cultural and historic environment as well as his work for local charities such as Alice House Hospice.

His efforts to protect and promote Hartlepool’s heritage will leave a lasting legacy, particularly in the Church Street area, where much of the regeneration work he championed continues to shape the town centre today.

Mr Ainslie's Funeral will take place on the 2nd December at 12 Noon at the Parish Church of St Hilda, on Hartlepool's Headland
