Dozens of Parking Tickets Issued to Police Vehicles – But Who Pays?

6th March 2026

Newly released figures show that vehicles owned by Cleveland Police have received dozens of parking tickets in recent years – although details as to how many were actually paid or cancelled remain unclear.

Information released under the Freedom of Information Act reveals that police-related operational vehicles operating on Teesside were issued a total of 114 parking tickets between 2022 and 2025.

The data shows a steady rise in tickets issued over the last three years.

  • 2022: 24 tickets

  • 2023: 34 tickets

  • 2024: 43 tickets

  • 2025: 13 tickets (so far)

The figures were unearthed following a request by a member of the public asking for details on parking penalties issued to police operational vehicles.

However, Cleveland Police confirmed it does not hold information on whether those tickets were paid, cancelled or overturned. Officials said that data is instead held by the local authorities responsible for issuing the penalties.

This means details such as how many fines were settled, how many were successfully appealed, and whether any were cancelled due to operational policing duties remain unknown at this stage.

Police vehicles can sometimes park in restricted areas when responding to incidents or carrying out urgent duties. In such cases, tickets may be cancelled if enforcement officers determine the vehicle was engaged in operational activity. One notable incident came in 2025, when persistent use of a taxi bay in Hartlepool by police vehicles led to a police van being issued a civil penalty notice, however, its unclear as to whether Hartlepool Borough Council enforced or waived the penalty ticket however the incident was shared on social media drawing mixed opinons on the incident...

But without the local council data, it's not yet clear how many of the tickets issued over the past four years ultimately resulted in payment.
