19th July 2025

A 33 year old man has been arrested after a tragic incident unfolded on Thursday night in Hartlepool when a Cleveland Police Dog Support Unit vehicle, allegedly responding to an emergency call, was involved in a serious collision on Stockton Rd. The crash, which occurred at around 9pm reportedly involved a BMW and a police vehicle carrying an officer and two police dogs.

Whilst the officer sustained only minor injuries in the crash, its claimed one of the police dogs in transit with the vehicle had to be put to sleep due to their injuries.

According to a Cleveland Police press release, both dogs were rushed to a veterinary clinic for urgent assessment. One of the dogs was found to be unharmed. However, one – a five-year-old Springer Spaniel who had served the force for over three years – was found to have suffered injuries so severe that he was sadly put to sleep.

A 33-year-old man was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with drink driving in connection with the crash. He’s due to appear at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on 1st August 2025, but Cleveland Police have confirmed that their investigation into the full circumstances of the collision is still ongoing.
