Lee Clark’s position at Hartlepool United is under increased pressure after Pools suffered their sixth National League defeat of the season — and their third successive league loss — with a damaging 3–1 home defeat against newly promoted Worthing.
Saturday afternoon's result at Victoria Park leaves Clark's side with just three victories from their opening nine National League matches, having now lost six games and failed to register a single draw.
Worthing struck through Cory Adjetey-Brew, Ricky Aguiar and Jose Marquez, while Will Harris grabbed Hartlepool's consolation goal in the 77th minute.
The latest setback follows defeats against Kidderminster Harriers and Altrincham and means Pools have now lost six of their last seven league fixtures, with the solitary exception being a 1–0 victory against Woking, representing a dramatic change in fortune after Hartlepool began the campaign with back-to-back victories against Barrow and Aldershot Town.
Pressure building on Clark
Clark only arrived at Victoria Park in May following a major review of Hartlepool United's football operations, with the former Huddersfield Town, Birmingham City and Blackpool boss brought in to oversee what was presented as a new era for the club.
At the beginning of the season, Clark spoke openly about giving supporters a team they could be proud of after several difficult years following relegation from the Football League in 2023. Those ambitions now appear to be some distance away, as Prior to Saturday's defeat, Hartlepool were already sitting 16th in the table, with nine points from eight matches, having lost five. Worthing's victory therefore makes it six defeats from nine, with Pools remaining stuck on nine points.
Even before the Worthing game, independent Hartlepool coverage was reporting that pressure was beginning to build on Clark after the 2–0 defeat at Kidderminster, a performance which Clark himself described as the worst of the campaign.
After that defeat, Clark accepted responsibility and acknowledged that supporters were entitled to criticise what they were seeing.
Pools then subsequently lost 2–1 at Altrincham before today's 3–1 home defeat against a Worthing side playing its first-ever season at National League level.

What makes the start particularly concerning is the level of expectation surrounding Clark's appointment.
When taking the job, Clark spoke of getting Hartlepool moving back towards the Football League and said he wanted a high-intensity side which pressed, played on the front foot and demonstrated "desire, togetherness and passion".
Hartlepool also recruited significant experience during the summer, including former Premier League and Championship striker Jordan Hugill, whose arrival was described by Clark himself as a significant signing for the club.
Yet nine league games into the new campaign, Pools have taken just nine points from a possible 27.
Worse still, Since beating Aldershot on August 15th, Hartlepool's league record reads six defeats from seven matches: Sutton United, Eastleigh, Halifax Town, Kidderminster Harriers, Altrincham and now Worthing have all beaten Clark's side.
The only interruption being the narrow victory over Woking.

Adding to Hartlepool United FC's run of misfortunes has been that pools has lost twice in the National League Cup, suffering the extraordinary 10–0 defeat against Middlesbrough U21s on August 11th, before being beaten 1–0 by Everton's U21 team earlier this month taking Hartlepool's competitive record since the beginning of the season to eight defeats.
Is Clark now facing the sack?
Whilst theres currently no official indication from Hartlepool United that Lee Clark is about to be dismissed, and it would be premature to report his departure as imminent without evidence from the club, fans are certain his days as Pools Manager can be counted on your fingers, with football always being a results-driven business, and with six defeats from nine league games, the result is likley to put the head coach under scrutiny.
Clark was appointed following an extensive restructuring of the football club and was allowed to shape the squad during the summer.
Pools will now travel to Scunthorpe on September 26th, before returning to Victoria Park to face Harrogate Town three days later.
After six defeats in nine league matches, another poor sequence would only intensify questions about how much time Clark will be afforded to turn things around before his P45 is handed out...
For the moment, Lee Clark remains Hartlepool United's head coach.
But after another afternoon to forget at Victoria Park, the pressure surrounding his position has undoubtedly become much more harder to ignore.
