Hartlepool Labour MP, Jonathan Brash, has come under heavy criticism following a social media post attacking Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK.
The controversy began this weekend, after Mr Farage released a video statement responding to the Manchester terrorist incident, in which he expressed deep concern over the state of the country, saying he felt “more worried about Britain than ever before” and describing the nation as “broken.”
In response, Mr Brash took to social media to accuse the Reform UK leader of “talking Britain down,” further branding Mr Farage a “Putin puppet.”
Unacceptable Comments at a time of National Crisis !

The comments sparked an immediate and widespread backlash online — not only from Mr Farage’s supporters but also from members of the public who accused Mr Brash of using social media irresponsibly. Many users criticised the MP for what they described as divisive and inflammatory rhetoric, suggesting that his posts contribute to the growing anger and polarisation seen across the UK political landscape.
Observers also drew parallels between Mr Brash’s tone and that of Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, whose own leadership is said to be under strain amid predictions that the government could face a significant electoral setback in the May 2026 local elections.
In addition to the national backlash, Mr Brash is facing renewed scrutiny within his own constituency, where sources have alleged the MP reportedly pressured Labour Party officials to support his wife, Cllr Pamela Hargreaves, for the leadership of Hartlepool Borough Council following the resignation of former leader Brenda Harrison.
Cllr Hargreaves, who now leads Hartlepool Borough Council, labelled by many to be one of Teesside's most Corrupt institutions, is expected to defend her council seat in the May 2026 local elections. However, insiders claim that Reform UK already has a candidate lined up to challenge her, anticipating that she will lose both her seat and her leadership position in as little as just seven months.
The controversy comes after Hartlepool Borough Council was declared an “authority with no public confidence” back in 2023 — a label that continues to haunt local council figures amidst growing public dissatisfaction against both the local council & its public figures.
