The now empty site, home to a former council run day centre could be transformed into a site for up to 18 small business units, subject to approval by the local council.

A long-vacant site in Hartlepool could soon be transformed into a hub for commercial activity, as plans have been submitted to build 18 business units on the former Havelock Day Centre site in Burbank Street.

If approved by council planning chiefs, the development could provide a significant boost to the local economy and create new employment opportunities.
The proposed plans include the construction of the business units along with a new access road to support the development. According to a planning statement submitted by Pyramid Architectural Designs on behalf of the applicant, the site is designated for mixed or open use, allowing flexibility to attract a variety of businesses. Potential uses for the units include light industrial work, office spaces, warehousing, and salesrooms, though specific tenants have not yet been confirmed.
The planning agent emphasised that bringing the site back into use would be beneficial for the area, stating that the development would not only support the applicant but also provide much-needed opportunities for local businesses and workers.
Hartlepool Borough Council reportedly sold the land to a private developer some time ago, leading to the demolition of the Havelock Centre in 2020 as part of the councils plans to level the site to make the land more attractive to sell, with the former council-operated day centre replaced with a multi-million-pound Centre for Independent Living, located just a short walk from the application site.
A decision on the application is expected in early May 2025. If given the green light, the development could mark a major step in revitalizing a long-neglected area of the town.
