Two Hartlepool businesses have been hit with fines totaling £50,000, after a Home Office investigation uncovered that they had employed illegal workers.

Reem’s Pizzeria, located on York Road, and 1BAG FR LLP, which owns the fishing vessel GV Artemis docked at Hartlepool Marina, faced penalties of £20,000 and £30,000, respectively. The investigation revealed that these businesses had employed individuals who either lacked permission to enter or remain in the UK, had expired visas, or had provided false documentation.

The fines could have been even steeper, with penalties potentially reaching up to £75,000. This crackdown comes amid increasing public pressure on the Home Office to intensify scrutiny of businesses suspected of hiring illegal workers.

Several other businesses in the Teesside and County Durham areas have also been fined for similar violations. The data, updated quarterly, underscores the growing focus on ensuring companies comply with immigration laws.
